NSK BRAND SHAFT BEARINGS
NSK is a leading bearing and motion control manufacturing company founded in Tokyo, Japan in 1916. Today NSK has several plants around the world including England, Germany, USA and Switzerland and by far one the best quality bearings available on the market today. Although these bearings are very costly, we feel that in an application with high load and dynamic forces such as a flail mower that such high quality bearings are required. These bearings are noticeably smoother, quieter, and cooler running than any competitor and far superior to any no-name brand. Some inferior bearings contain plastic interior ball cages that are susceptible to breakage from shock loads. Poor material and tolerances generate excessive heat that translates into premature bearing failure and even belt wear as the heat travel to the pulleys and the belts. All bearings are not created equal, and this is a feature that should not be overlooked when shopping for a flail mower.

HP REQUIREMENTS
18-40 PTO horse power
CUTTING HEIGHT
3/4″ – 2.5″ Adjustable to meet various height requirements
DECK PLATE MATERIAL THICKNESS
3/16″ .1875″ Structural Q235 steel for durability.
SIDE PLATE THICKNESS
3/16″ .1875″ Structural Q235 steel for durability.
BLADE TYPE
Hammer or reversible Y-blades. Our hammer blades are 40cr, alloy structural steel. (American standard, AISI/SAE/ASTM steel no: 5140) and forged to a tapered wedge shape to avoid material buildup on the blades. Each blade weighs 1 lb. 15 oz. (cast steel is much more durable than cast iron) competitors use flat face blades. The reversible Y-blades are made from .42″ 60si2mn, spring steel, (American standard: A29m) formed, heat treated, and quenched in oil. They weigh 1 lb. 7 oz. for the set. Use the hammer blades for clearing saplings (1″ diameter or less), and the Y-blades for grasses.

NUMBER OF BLADES
18 Hammer or 36 Y-blades.
PRECISION BLADE OVERLAP
The blades are staggered precisely with no gap in the mowing area. Blade overlap is important to achieve an even cutting result.
ROTOR ROTATION – REVERSE
Reverse – the rotor spins in the opposite direction as the wheels of the tractor when traveling forward. This allows the blades to shear the material as it is folded forward by the mowers. The material is then thrown up and over the rotor.
ROTOR TUBE DIAMETER – 3″
3″- Heavy duty 5/16″ wall tubing for long life.
BALANCED ROTOR TUBE
The rotor tube is balanced to reduce vibration and ensures that the mower runs smooth, and reduces wear on the bearings.
BALANCED CAST IRON PULLEYS
The V-belt pulleys are heavy duty cast iron and balanced to eliminate vibration, and run smooth.
ROTOR SWING DIAMETER – 10.75″
Large swing so that the blades build required inertia.
ROTOR SHAFT SPEED
2092 RPM
BLADE SPEED – 97 FT./SEC.
High speed = Efficiency to cleanly cut material
HITCH TYPE
Category 1 standard 3-point or category 1 quick hitch – will attach to any category 1 3-point hitch and will also work with cat 1 quick hitch.
OFFSET FROM PTO CENTER
This feature allows for offset from center to the right of the tractor. This feature is helpful for mowing around fences, buildings; walkways exc. From the center of the PTO the mower extends 31″ to the right and 24″ to the left.
DRIVE BELTS
3 Total B-series USA gates “truflex” – we use only USA made gates belts on our flail mowers for long life.
EASY DRIVE BELT TENSION
A single bolt on top of the mower is utilized to replace and provide tension to the belts.
PTO SPEED
540 ONLY
GEARBOX RATING
Up to 45 hp. Heavy duty proven oil bath gearbox for long life.
GEARBOX TYPE
Cast iron 540 RPM with internal over-running clutch – when the PTO shaft is disengaged the built in over running clutch allows the PTO shaft to stop turning while the gearbox and rotor shaft slow down gradually. This is an important feature, without it, the gearbox will slam to a halt when the PTO is disengaged, causing stress to the gearbox and your tractor. This feature should not be overlooked when shopping for a mower.
REPLACEABLE SKID SHOES
The skid shoes reduce gouging are bolt on so you can adjust or replace them easily when the time comes.
DRIVELINE / PTO SHAFT
1-3/8″ 6 spline w/slip clutch.
GREASEABLE SHIELDED BEARINGS
Accessible greasable bearings for easy maintenance.
REAR HEIGHT ADJUSTING ROLLER DIAMETER
4.25″ With tapered ends – this roller contacts the ground to ensure even cutting height. The ends of this roller are rounded to eliminate gouging when turning corners. A scraper bar ensures that mud and debris buildup is cleaned off as you go.
POWDER COAT FINISH
The rust resistant baked-on powder coat finish is more durable than conventional paint to keep your machine looking good for years.

9 reviews for WoodMaxx FM-54

Mike Burke –
I’m very, very pleased with the FM-54 flail mower. I received it yesterday, and completed setup today. I put 3-4 hours on the mower today, and the performance exceeded my expectations. I ordered the hammer blades, but used the installed Y-blades today to take care of some growth on my trails, and to clear an area with small brush and deep leaves in front of my house. The mower is quiet, and works great. I’m running it on a JD 2032R with iMatch quick hitch. The PTO shaft length was very close to perfect. I like the 54”width for mowing my forested areas, which are very tight. Great machine.
Mark –
When I received my FM-54 I was quite impressed with the crating. All Angle iron, custom cut, drilled and bolted to fit this exact unit. Completely wrapped in plastic as well. The unit arrived with zero damaged and zero defects after a 1000+ mile freight trip. the set up is very straight forward and easy to do.
My first cut proved to be very impressive. I did this with the FM-54 mated my TYM T264 with twenty-five engine HP and 18.3 at the PTO. My FM-54 came equipped with the hammer blades. Not once did I over tax my tractor while cutting. The FM-54 easily cut and mulched the the 6-10 foot scrub up to 1.5 inch diameter. with ease as well as topped off the saw palmetto. Just go slow and let the machine do its work. I set the height to the highest cut level to help prevent hitting any hidden stumps. The roller/skids did an excellent job guiding the mower over the terrain, especially in the saw palmetto where the roots cannot be seen. The smaller width of the FM-54 proved itself particularly useful in the tight spots in the trees. So far, I really love this mower. I cannot wait to get back out there.
Len Kaufer –
I’m running my FM54 with hammer blades on a John Deere 1025R. About 9 acres of my property is heavily wooded and just loaded with scrap brush that grows 3 to 6 feet in one season. I feel that I have been liberated because the FM54 absolutely destroys all the unwanted brush (and small fallen tree limbs) without me having to get off the tractor seat. The result is walking and 4-wheeler paths with a nice layer of mulch left behind that does not require any additional cleanup. Also, I haven’t run into anything that slows the mower down. It just chews it’s way through with no complaining. I wish I would have bought this sooner
John Sanborn –
Have had the FM-54 attached to a Kubota 2301 for the whole summer. Has been very good with hammers. Got the quick hitch also which is a must for me.
Peter Nasmyth –
I run mine on a Kabota B2320 and have charged through some pretty dense material with good results. Finished look is a rough cut as apposed to manicured. Impressed with good, solid construction and ease of attachment. Customer service was second to none making this a pleasant experience all around.
Jeff Quick –
Received my FM-54 orange flail mower today. The metal packing crate is really nice. Assembly was easy and straightforward, and the PTO shaft did not require cutting. It took a some time to get the the lift height set, but once I found the sweet spot it worked so well. It runs super quiet, and my Kubota 26hp 19.5 pto hp runs it very well.
Thomas Lloyd –
This mower does really well in long and short grass. It has far exceeded my expectations in the short amount of time I have used it. Joel in service has been awesome to work with as far as issues after the purchase and advice on maintenance. I will be looking to buy other Woodmaxx products in the future.
Robert Gentry –
I’m running this flail mower on a 2018 JD 1025R. This is another great tool added to my arsenal. I have a 3 acre wooded area of my property that I keep mowed and I always dread the first cut of the year due to all the small limbs and sticks. Not anymore! I don’t have to pick everything with this beast!
Andrew Stark –
I have used my FM-54 for over 25 hours now. I am extremely satisfied and impressed with it. I run the mower on a John Deere 1026R (rated 18 HP at PTO) using the hammer blades. I started by mowing the yard around the house to learn what the machine was doing and be closer to the barn for tools to make adjustments. The hammer blades provide such a good finish on lawn that I have continued to use this mower for a lot of the lawn. I have also cut moderate to tall and heavy field grass/weeds/vetch, berry cane, and young autumn olive (year old and more). In low range I have not had to slow down for anything less than very heavy growth. The cut and distribution of grass and vetch that was at the height of the tractor hood was very good. Second and subsequent cuts are pretty clean. The mower is closer to the tractor and lighter than a rotary I was using, so I can get into more places and maneuver better with far less demand on the tractor. Thanks for an outstanding product.
