ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MECHANICAL AND HYDRAULIC WM-SERIES CHIPPER?

A: The WM-8M and the WM-8H are basically the same machine; they are identical except for the in-feed system, so they are made out of the same materials and have the same capacity, same blades, etc. The difference is in the extra features that the hydraulic in-feed system offers over the mechanical one. The hydraulic machine is significantly faster than the mechanical (runs at about 75 ft. /min vs. Approximately 58 on the mechanical). This is because it has two counter rotating in-feed rollers that are powered, whereas on the mechanical machine, only the top in-feed roller is powered. This also enables the hydraulic machine to "grab" the material a bit better than the mechanical one. In addition to this, the hydraulic model also offers a reverse function. This enables you to back out material that might get wedged into the throat of the chipper. Generally, jamming is not a problem-- however; you might attempt to feed a very stiff branch with a wide "y" fork that could get wedged in the throat of the chipper, in which case the reverse comes in handy. The hydraulic machine is also a bit lower maintenance than the mechanical machine. The mechanical machine has a clutch which must be greased every couple of hours if being used heavily. The hydraulic machine doesn't have a clutch, so it’s not necessary.

The TM-86H, which is a slightly different animal than the WM-series chippers. It was originally designed to be used with small, subcompact tractors that we previously did not offer a chipper for (Kubota BX series, John Deere 1000 series, etc.). That is one of the reasons why it sits low to the ground (PTO is about 12" off the ground). It is also light weight (595lbs), and can be used on a tractor that has as little as 15hp at the PTO. It can be used on a tractor of any horsepower, but one thing that needs to be considered is whether the tractor's PTO will reach the TM's PTO while enabling PTO shaft to be within 15 degrees of level. If it would be too high, you would need to put the chipper on something to raise it up. The TM is a combination gravity feed/hydraulic feed. It has a hydraulically powered in feed roller (one) that pulls the material in, but because the in feed bin is slanted, it also uses gravity to pull the material into the flywheel. The benefit of this is that you can put short material/loose (twigs, short branches, bark) into this bin, and they will get into the flywheel to be chipped. Short material cannot be placed in the WM-series chippers, because it will not reach the feed rollers to be pulled in. The TM-86H will take a maximum of 6" material, because the throat opening is 8x6.

The WC-8N is our value chipper, and does not have the features of the flagship WM series chippers, or TM-series chippers. It is a very economical mechanical power feed chipper that is great for home, light duty use. It is of lighter construction, and not recommended for commercial applications.

Q: IS THE HYDRAULIC CHIPPER SHIPPED WITH HYDRAULIC OIL IN IT?

A: No, we cannot ship the chipper full of hydraulic oil, since it is considered a hazardous substance.

Q: I ONLY HAVE 19 HP. AT THE PTO WILL THIS CHIPPER WORK FOR ME?

A: Yes, but remember that the efficiency of the chipper is directly related to the hp of your tractor. With 19 hp at the PTO you can expect to easily chip material of up to 4”and even soft material up to 6”. A tractor with 50hp at the PTO allows you to chip just about anything you can feed into the chipper.

Q: HOW LONG WILL THE KNIVES LAST?

A: the WoodMaxx WM series chippers are shipped with USA made A8 tool steel knives installed. This is the highest quality material you can use for a chipper knife. However, it really is not possible to give an average knife life span. It's like any other sharp instrument (kitchen knife, razor, etc.); the longevity varies with many factors. With tractors of less hp, it will be more important for you to keep the knives sharp, and you will need to sharpen them more frequently. Chipping dry, dirty material will also shorten the life of the knives.

Q: CAN I SHARPEN THE KNIVES?

A: You can sharpen the knives if you are skilled and have a good quality grinding stone, but it is best to have a machine shop sharpen the knives.

Q: HOW MUCH ASSEMBLY IS INVOLVED?

A: The WM-chipper is shipped about 90% assembled. If you follow the instructions, you can expect it will take less than 2-3 hours to be up and running. You can view our assembly videos on the product page for the WM-8M and the WM-8H. You can also download the owner’s manual for each of these machines, which follows along with the assembly videos. Download manuals on this page:

The MX-9900 and the TM-86H require almost no assembly.

The WC-8N will take about 4 hours of assembly; it does not have prior assembly performed at WoodMaxx hp.

Q: WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE WM- CHIPPER WHEN IT IS FULLY ASSEMBLED?

A: When fully assembled the WM-8M or WM-8H chipper measures 78” long, 36” wide and 73” tall.

Q: WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE CHIPPER WHEN IT IS IN ITS CRATE?

A: The crate the WM-series chippers are shipped in is 46x36x47. The crate for the WC-8N is slightly larger. The crate for the TM-86H is 36x42x65

Q: THE CHIPPER IS QUICK HITCH COMPATIBLE; DO I NEED A QUICK HITCH?

A: No, the chipper will hook up to category 1 quick hitch, but it is not required to do so. The chipper will still attach to any standard category 1 or 2 three point hitch. John Deere I-Match quick hitches need a specialized top link if being utilized with a WM-series chipper. Please contact us for more info.

Q: IS THE PTO SHAFT INCLUDED?

A: Yes, a shear bolt protected PTO shaft is included with the chipper. The USA manufactured PTO shaft is available for an additional $150 when ordering the chipper, or for $250 afterward. Mowers and tillers come with slip clutch driveshafts; shear bolt drive shafts (USA or imported) are not compatible with mowers and tillers.

Q: WHAT IS INVOLVED WITH SHIPPING TO CANADA?

A: We ship into Canada frequently. Canadian customers are required to pay 5% GST (no HST, or PST) and a $100.00 customs fee. Shipping is seamless and easy. We handle everything here for you.

Q: HOW IS THE CHIPPER SHIPPED?

A: The chipper is shipped in a steel crate. It can be picked up with forks, or lifted up from the top.

Q: WILL THE TRUCKING COMPANY CALL ME BEFORE MY MACHINE ARRIVES?

A: Yes, unless you specifically request otherwise. The trucking company will give you at least 24hrs notice. They will set up a day and time to deliver it to you. Please note that they usually do not do weekend deliveries. Please see our shipping policy here: SHIPPING POLICY

Q: WHAT SIZE TRUCK WILL BE DELIVERING THE CHIPPER?

A: Most often, freight is delivered on a 53’ full size semi-truck. Smaller trucks can sometimes be used for an additional fee. Additionally, you can also pick freight up at a terminal. Please see our shipping policy here: SHIPPING POLICY

Q: DOES SOMEONE NEED TO BE THERE TO SIGN FOR THE CHIPPER?

A: Yes, someone must be present to sign for the chipper. Remember to inspect for any freight related damages before signing for the chipper. If there is major damage to the machine, you have the right to refuse it. Please contact WoodMaxx if this should occur. Please read the entire shipping policy located here: SHIPPING POLICY

Q: HOW DO I UNLOAD THE CHIPPER FROM THE TRUCK?

A: the chipper will be delivered using a tractor-trailer. Usually this will be a full size truck, (“18 wheeler”). Your delivery address must be accessible by a truck of this size. The driver will not back up your driveway; he or she will park on the side of the road. From there the chipper will be moved to the end door of the trailer. If you requested lift gate, they will lower the chipper to the ground for you. From there it is your responsibility to move the freight. If you did not request the lift gate, then it is your responsibility to take the freight off of the truck with forks, or any other method you may choose. Please make sure any machinery or tools you use to unload the truck are capable of lifting the weight of the chipper and its crate. The full shipping policy is available to read here: SHIPPING POLICY

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED REPLACEMENT PARTS?

A: Call us with the part you need, we can usually ship whatever you need within 48 hours.
